75th Annual AUBER Fall Conference: Economic Resiliency from Coast to Coast

Considering current issues – pandemic recovery, monetary volatility, supply chain issues, international turmoil, etc. – how do economies and industries stay afloat? How can communities prepare and adapt?

We look forward to discussing these topics and more at our 75th annual conference! Join us in Pensacola Beach, FL, for four days of knowledge sharing, networking, and celebrating AUBER’s legacy as a connector of researchers from coast to coast.

We have a fantastic program lined up featuring our keynote speakers David Altig (Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta), Judy Bense (University of West Florida), Bruce Kellison (University of Texas at Austin), Jerry Parrish (Florida State University), Raymond Sfeir (Chapman University), and Douglas P. Woodward (University of South Carolina).

Airports

The nearest airport to Pensacola Beach is Pensacola International Airport (PNS), which has a variety of ground transportation options that make it easy to access the surrounding areas. However, there are several other options from which to choose:

EXCELLENCE IN PUBLICATIONS

Electronic

Electronic publications are designed for email, tablet, and mobile device use, and they take advantage of the digital format. Submissions may be interactive, but this is not a requirement.
Electronic submissions may be one-time publications or part of a series, and may cover any topic. Submissions will be judged based on quality and impact of content, visual appeal, how well the underlying data and/or analysis has been synthesized, and overall feel.
University of Utah’s Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute won the 2021 Award for Best Electronic Publication during our recent conference in Boulder, Colorado, which was postponed to spring of 2022 due to COVID.

Print

A print publication may include: newsletters; brochures; promotional materials; abstracts and other data publications; economic outlooks; special studies; technical or contract reports; magazines; and journals.
Print submissions may be one-time publications or part of a series and may be on any topic. Submissions will be judged based on quality and impact of content, visual appeal, how well the underlying data and/or analysis has been synthesized, and overall feel.

Website

Submissions may include an AUBER unit’s website or a website created by the AUBER unit for a client.
Website submissions will be judged based on content (text, animation, etc.), visual appeal, ease of navigation, functionality and overall experience.
University of Alabama’s Center for Business and Economic Research won the 2019 Award for Best Website during the fall conference in Savannah, Georgia.

SPECIAL AWARDS

AUBER Fellow Award

Nominees in this category should meet all, or substantially all, of the criteria listed below.  The organization may award one fellow per year. The successful candidate should meet the following criteria:

Criteria

– Be an active or retired member of the organization
– Maintained AUBER membership for 12 years
– Held center director or equivalent role at a host institution
– Served on AUBER board of directors in leadership capacity
– Provided significant leadership and substantial service to the organization.
  • Chaired committees
  • Frequent conference session organizer/participant
  • Host and/or program chair of fall conference
  • Acted as AUBER’s liaison in partnerships with other organizations
Carl Bonham, director of University of Hawaii’s Economic Research Organization, won the AUBER Fellow Award during the 2018 conference held in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Polzin Prize for Best Paper

Do you have a great paper you would like to present during our fall conference? You could win the Paul Polzin Prize for Best Paper – with its $500 cash award – to be presented during the upcoming conference in Pensacola Beach.

Purpose

To raise the level of academic rigor on some (but not all) panels; encourage peer-reviewed publication of AUBER papers and presentations; and to provide a more academic experience at the AUBER conference for those who need it.

Eligibility

– The paper’s lead author must be an individual AUBER member at the time of the Fall Conference or be employed at an AUBER member unit whose membership is in good standing (conference registration fees include a one-year membership for non-AUBER members who submit papers for consideration).
– The paper must be presented on a panel at the Fall Conference.
– The paper should be prepared in academic format (APA or other commonly accepted scholarly style).
– Because the purpose is to encourage new work, submissions should not have been previously published or accepted for publication.
Submission Deadline
Submit one PDF copy of your paper attached to an email to Juliette Tennert, conference committee chair, by Aug. 1, 2022. The winner will be announced during this year’s fall conference. View submission guidelines.
Michael Hicks, director of the Center for Business and Economic Research at Ball State University, received the Polzin Prize for Best Paper award during the 2019 fall conference in Savannah, Georgia.

R. Thayne Robson Award

The Thayne Robson Award is the highest honor that AUBER awards to an individual for longtime commitment and service to the organization.

Eligibility

To earn the Robson Award, individuals must be AUBER members for at least 15 years, be center directors, have served on the AUBER board of directors and be an economic and public policy leaders in their state.
The R. Thayne Robson Award is awarded every other year.

Patrick Barkey, director of the Bureau of Business and Economic Research at University of Montana, was presented with the 2021 Thayne Robson Award during our recent conference in Boulder, Colorado.

Saturday, October 15

Two FREE pre-conference workshops added:
· Workshop 1: Speaking with the Press and Government Leaders (9-10 a.m.)
· Workshop 2: Mapping Data by Zip Code in Tableau (10-11 a.m.)
There is no cost to attend, although you must select one or both options when registering.

EXCURSION / DINNER

Monday, October 17

· We have chartered a boat which will take us on a tour of the gulf, then on to the mainland where we will enjoy dinner at the Museum of Commerce. Maximum capacity on the boat is limited to the first 100 persons. Alternately, you may choose to forego the boat and meet us at the  museum via other modes of transportation.
· This activity is available to all full conference registrants and their guests/spouses (add-on). Both the boat tour and dinner at the museum are optional. Although there is no additional cost to attend, you will be required to RSVP when registering.
· All registrants who RSVP for the boat tour will receive a boarding pass at conference check-in. You will be expected to show the pass when boarding. Boarding begins 45 minutes prior to departure.
· If you and/or your guest register and later need to cancel your boat and/or dinner reservation, please contact us at auber@bsu.edu as soon as possible so we may reassign your seat(s).

CONFERENCE HOTEL

Overlooking the Gulf of Mexico, the Hilton Pensacola Beach offers a variety of water sports, as well as two waterfront outdoor pools. Also available are a hot tub, sushi bar, and poolside dining. There is a pool and lazy river available at the neighboring hotel, open to Hilton guests. Historic downtown Pensacola is a 20-minute drive away, and the Naval Aviation Museum is 35 minutes away.

If rooms are unavailable at the Hilton, we recommend the Holiday Inn Resort or the SpringHill Suites by Marriott. Both are within a few blocks’ distance of our hotel. Contact auber@bsu.edu if you need further assistance.

AUBER is currently organizing research-track sessions for our annual fall conference, October 15-18, 2022. We invite submissions of papers or session proposals on any topic central to AUBER’s mission, and/or fitting with our conference theme, Economic Resiliency from Coast to Coast.
