Economic Impact of COVID-19 on Regional Economies – REMI

The COVID-19 pandemic has precipitated a deep economic crisis across the U.S., but its effects have not been felt evenly. States and cities have been affected differentially, both as a result of the virus’s natural dynamics (e.g., hitting the tightly packed travel hub of NYC particularly hard early on) and policy responses (e.g., stay-at-home orders, economic shutdowns, re-openings) that varied widely across jurisdictions. As the nation continues to chart its path forward, it is important to understand not only the top-level impacts of the economic recession, but also how those impacts differ from region to region.

Build story-telling skills through data visualization tools, with a focus on the Covid-19 pandemic. We will discuss how to present FRED data in different ways – as a graph, a map, a table, or a single number – and then compile the visualizations into a dashboard relevant to your topic of research or your geographical region. Because the numbers and figures in a FRED dashboard update automatically, every time the series update the stories they tell stay fresh and compelling.

In the last year alone, the FRED team has added over 200,000 new time series and improved several key features, such as the search tool.
