Build story-telling skills through data visualization tools, with a focus on the Covid-19 pandemic. We will discuss how to present FRED data in different ways – as a graph, a map, a table, or a single number – and then compile the visualizations into a dashboard relevant to your topic of research or your geographical region. Because the numbers and figures in a FRED dashboard update automatically, every time the series update the stories they tell stay fresh and compelling.
In the last year alone, the FRED team has added over 200,000 new time series and improved several key features, such as the search tool. Join us for a discussion on data visualizations with FRED, follow along and create your own dashboard, or chime in and ask about your favorite FRED data and features.

About Maria A. Arias
Maria A. Arias works on the FRED team developing and maintaining the data update process. She also helps lead FRED workshops for new and existing audiences to market new features and help users make the most of FRED. Prior to joining the FRED team, Maria was a Senior Research Associate also in the Research Division, where she worked alongside economists to analyze datasets on topics from regional employment to national growth. She has published research on metro area economic activity, as well as poverty and middle-income traps. View her full bio here.
About Yvetta Fortova
Yvetta Fortova is the manager of FRED and FRED-family products (ALFRED, GeoFRED) in the Research Division, where she oversees the collection, organization, and publication of data found in FRED. She also leads the FRED Data Desk’s agile development team in efforts to improve the website, provide customer service, increase the efficiency of operations, and promote all FRED-related products. About Diego Mendez-Carbajo
Diego Mendez-Carbajo works to bridge economic education and the use of FRED. He regularly facilitates workshops on active learning with data at regional and national academic conferences. Before joining the Research Division, Diego was a Professor of Economics at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Illinois, where he taught a wide range of courses for nineteen years. His scholarship on teaching and learning has been published in the Journal of Economic Education, International Review of Economics Education, and American Journal of Distance Education, among others. In 2017 he received the Abbejean Kehler Technology Award from the National Association of Economic Educators (NAEE) for his work promoting the use of technology to improve the delivery of programs in economic education. He is currently the chair of the NAEE Research Committee and an associate editor of The American Economist. View his full bio here.
